Dealing with TIcks
Savoring the Great Outdoors is something HUGGERS enjoy bc their beloved rescues need it to thrive. ♥️ This lovely weather allows us to enjoy camping, hiking, gardening, picnicking, BBQ, outdoor festivals, family parties & a whole host of other fun times. A trusted friend recommended a simple DIY remedy I’m sharing because she says it works. Ticks aren’t just abhorrent to experience on one’s body or crawling on our pets. Ticks are more than an irksome bite: they can carry a wide variety of pathogens, parasites & viruses that can potentially spread diseases to their hosts (human & animal alike) by regurgitating infected saliva into the feeding wound they create in hosts’ skin.
REPELLENT FOR YOUR PETS: Add 1 cup of water to a spray bottle, followed by 2 cups of distilled white vinegar. Ticks dislike the smell & taste of vinegar, and will be repelled by this singular ingredient alone. Add 2 tbsp of vegetable/almond oil, both of which contain sulfur (another natural tick repellent).
TO MAKE A REPELLENT THAT WILL ALSO DETER FLEAS: mix in 2 tbsp of lemon juice OR citrus oil as either will repel ticks & fleas while also adding a lovely scent. Spray onto the pet's dry coat, staying away from sensitive areas including eyes, nose, mouth & genitals. When outdoors for an extended period, spray this solution on 2-3 to times per day.
FOR HUMANS: In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups of distilled white vinegar & 1 cup of water. To make a scented solution so you do not smell like bitter vinegar all day, add 20 drops of your favorite essential oil. (DO NOT DO THIS WITH YOUR PETS as some essential oils are harmful to them).
Eucalyptus oil is a calm, soothing scent that also works as a tick repellent, while peppermint and citrus oils give off a strong crisp scent that also repel ticks.
After mixing the solution, spray onto clothing, skin & hair before going outdoors. Reapply every 4 hours to keep ticks at bay and away from you & your loved ones. And, as always EXAMINE YOUR SKIN & HAIR WHEN INSIDE TO ENSURE THE ABSENCE OF THE PESKY PESTS.
The dangers of ticks are real; they can be powerful vectors of disease & have far a greater impact on human & animal health than we might realize (beyond the ICK factor).
This is why Golden Huggs follows BEST PRACTICES in rescue on ALL OF OUR ADULT DOGS. Rather than opt for the less expensive blood test to detect heartworm alone (transmitted by mosquitoes) dogs in our care receive the more comprehensive blood test for antigens that would be present from various concerning tick borne diseases as well.
* pet owners should also have annual tick panels done on their pets as so many animals may be asymptomatic. SHARING IS CARING. EDUCATION & AWARENESS are powerful friends to have . . .
Dog Training
YouTube has lots of good dog training videos. One of our favorites is the Vermont Dog Trainer channel. One very helpful recent video is the wrong way to meet a dog. Meeting an unfamiliar dog in a safe way will prevent potential bites.
